A beautiful original book safe.
18th century or early 19th Century and probably continental in origin.
Hand made wooden carcass with painted decoration to the front. Velvet lined interior.
This would have been set amongst a country house library and used to hide jewels or precious documents. The spine of the box looks exactly like a book of the period and would have blended in seamlessly.
A very rare and beautiful piece. Plenty of wear and paint loss to the painting which looks to be Venice or maybe Paris ?
All in all a beautiful decorative item and quite rare indeed.
