Antique 19th Century Persian Qajar Engraved Brass Tobacco tin

Antique 19th Century Persian Qajar Engraved Brass Tobacco Container

A fascinating antique Persian brass lidded container, probably dating from the Qajar period of the 19th century.

The small cylindrical body is finely engraved with figural medallions, animals and traditional scrolling ornament. Its close-fitting removable lid is similarly decorated and finished with a raised, fluted central boss.

Containers of this form are thought to have been made for storing tobacco, spices or ink. Closely comparable examples have been attributed to both the Persian Qajar and earlier Zand periods; this example is conservatively described as 19th century.

The brass retains a wonderfully aged surface, with tarnishing, darkened areas, verdigris and general wear consistent with its considerable age. An unusual and highly decorative piece of antique Persian metalwork.
